Team Spirit

In corporate world, team means a designated leader or captain whose is responsible for many things like listening, motivating, teaching, often preaching management, what should be done or what should not be.

In his absence, these task become responsibilities of next in chain and whole team needs to follow the structure to reach at all decisions.
Is this the way "Team" should be?

Let us compare this with a soccer team. There is of course a coach, a captain and a vice captain. The captain may not be the best player. Nor he assumes the role that he is responsible to score every goal. He is one who has experience to handle crisis and manage the group as one.

He can not and should not think that it is who that has to be guide in the play. Every player works responsibly and plays the part. At any point of time when a player is reaching out to score a goal, all serve him. "Service" of the winner in a winning moment is the "Team Spirit". It is situational and in each situation there are players that assume prime importance and much more than that of any other player including the "Captain" or "Vice Captain". In moment of Goal Keeper trying to save goal, he is the "Leader of the situation" and every one aligns automatically to support his leadership.

"Service" of the winner in a winning moment is the "Team Spirit" and it is situational and in each situation there are players that assume prime importance and much more than that of any other player including the "Captain" or "Vice Captain"."

Team spirit is a well developed mature behaviour displayed by each member of team. When a goal is scored, all celebrate. The player who scores does claim victory, but no one is offended. In fact team feels proud. End of game, during presentations, when highest scorer is presented with best player trophy, team genuinely celebrates and expresses happiness. There is no room of envy. No room for criticism or bitching, for the players are groomed to appreciate winning and even to learn a trick or two(techniques) from the player of that day!

Let us imagine what happens that night during celebrations. Everyone happily enjoying success. Everyone complimenting each other for their contributions in success. The players that sat on benches, during the match, that day equally participate. Some in pretty light mood admit where they failed. Such admissions are dismissed by everybody lightly.

Coach does talk about strengths and weaknesses of match next day in a way that compliments the team and yet teach them the lessons.

Even when team fails to win the game, introspection begins rather than blame game. Often, if blame game begins, coach has to go because he failed to grow Team Spirit.

  1. The world is not so perfect. Its too theoretical. The players may seem to be enjoying with the best player but at the back of their mind they have the grudge.
Everyone wants to set us his own individual records. As in "Chak de India" when they were loosing to Australia.

  2. Team Spirit is Team Sprit be it in sports or business, it’s outcome is always more than the sum total of all the individuals’ effort in the team.

  3. I often like sports comparisons. The best one is a game you may not be as familiar with. Volleyball is one of my personal favorites because your team can only score when you are serving. What a distinct and important metaphor for life.

If we all lived and worked under this principal what a different world it would be. The company or individual that can recognize they only truly score when serving a customer, in what even form the customer takes, is the one that ultimately leads everyone to win.
